Chamber Music in the ClassroomEach year, SCMS sponsors visits to public schools throughout Seattle and on the Eastside to introduce students to live chamber music. Each school typically receives a series of three visits from a professional string quartet. Student musicians have the opportunity to hear beautiful chamber music played, as well as observe technique, ask questions, and receive coaching on specific pieces they are playing in class. For most students, this is not only their first chance to observe professional musicians up close, but also their first introduction to chamber music. Chamber music is an art form that fosters interaction and connections, a give-and-take approach that young people can carry out into the world to benefit greater society and the future. Our Chamber Music in the Classroom teaching artists use music to emphasize the importance of communication, discipline, and personal responsibility. This program is designed to inspire and encourage all young musicians, regardless of their playing level. For more information, please contact us. |
"I learned that you have to be confident in yourself. Also, I learned that lots of parts count on each other." - Taylor, 2nd year violin "The presence of the musicians-their actions and reactions-speak volumes to the students" - Aaron Hennings, Orchestra Teacher at Mercer Middle School "I thought it was the coolest thing. I have never gotten up close and personal with live professional musicians." - Mark, 5th year cello "I learned to discuss music history more with my students instead of just jumping into the notes." - Janet Miller, Orchestra Teacher at Rose Hill Jr. High "I listen to a lot of heavy metal and punk rock, but watching the chamber music musicians was very exciting too!" - Michelle, 4th year violin
